KUALA LUMPUR (AP): Malaysia has postponed a campaign to detain and deport hundreds of thousands of Indonesian illegal immigrants following a request from Jakarta, news reports said on Thursday.
Jakarta sought the delay because of next month's presidential election and the Muslim fasting month in October, Malaysian Home Minister Azmi Khalid said after a meeting Wednesday with Indonesia's Minister of Social Affairs Bachtiar Chamsyah.
Nearly 300,000 people, mostly Indonesians and Filipinos, fled or were deported from Malaysia during a crackdown on illegal immigrants in 2002 which prompted claims of widespread mistreatment.
