EXHIBITION IN COLOMBO ON FAILURES TO PREVENT TORTURE

Chitral Perera janasansadaya<manava@sltnet.lk>

A major exhibition opened in Colombo. At the Public Library auditorium on 16 of April on the theme of elimination of torture. A large amount of exhibits depicting individual cases of torture, paintings, posters explaining the reasons for torture and laws against torture, highlighting the failures of the legal process have been offered to the public. The exhibition is organized by janasansadaya, a local organization working towards elimination of torture and Asian Human Rights commission.
The major part of the exhibition is devoted to the failures of the prosecuting branch- Attorney General's department- to enforce the existing legal provisions against torture. Under the Sri Lakan law Torture is an
offence punishable with minimum of seven years of imprisonment. However, despite the existing laws, no one has yet been punished under this law though hundreds of torture cases have been reported was the comment made by the organisers at the opening of the three day exhibition held at the Public Library Auditorium in Colombo.
